Liberia Information

western atlantic

Liberia endured a 15 year civil war during which rebels executed political leaders and the educated. Rebels then destroyed most of the buildings with fire and floods. With American influence, Liberia's president, Charles Taylor, finally stepped down. Now, Liberia has been at relative peace for two years, but the country remains in a state of devastation. Taylor had embezzled most of the country's money, and those few leaders who escaped the brutal attacks are trying to rebuild. The country is without electricity, telephones and running water. The roads, which had been destroyed, are slowly being rebuilt. In addition to rebuilding its infrastructure and economy, Liberia must rebuild hospitals and provide medical care to its people. In this area, Liberia is in dire need.

We have formed relationships with World Wide Missions of Liberia, a local charitable organization, and will be working hand in hand to provide community-based clinics and to refurbish two small hospitals, each the size of a small rambler home.

We have also established a working relationship with Phebe Hospital and will be working to help staff this facility, which provides medical care to a population of one million with only three doctors!

We also are partnering with Cuttington University, which has started a nursing program with 600 nursing students. We will assist the university with teaching and preceptorships and will provide opportunities for students to explore their new skills in bush clinics.
